West Wind Procession, Wells Art Contemporary 2023. Wells Cathedral, Somerset.

Processions play an integral part in the rhythm of the liturgy within every Cathedral, often at the beginning and end of services. West Wind Procession is a site specific installation made in response to the significance of processions within the liturgy, as well as the extraordinary beauty and drama of the Cathedral building itself.

A group of eighty vessels voyage up the Chapter House steps as if blown by the wind, diminishing in size as they climb. They go on to disappear round the steep curve to the Chapter House.

Transient and ephemeral, each vessel contains a soul making its final passage. Delicate and fragile, each one is unique and made with intricate detail from leaves, bark, heather, shells, seaweed, drift wood and washed up tiny sea creatures, all pinned together with blackthorn. These fragments are gathered from the vessel's path to the sea, to that moment of transition and exchange where the land meets the sea, the sweet water meets the salt.

A few have copper plated seaweed within them, small and shining, celebrating the precious fact of life on earth.

At once playful and serious this is a joyous piece, a celebration of the journey of life as well as a lament for the moment of death. They sail through the great ship of the Cathedral, reflecting all beginnings and all endings.

West Wind Procession won the Chub Bulleid people's prize.
